Hangman

For John Howard: Retire In Peace.

Since all we’ve ever known, which means such power
as moves us to the known, is what we broker
free and alone, you’d recognise this hour.

A greying woman walking home, the flower
she picks is rich with once what once you wrote her
(since all we’ve ever known, which means such power

as you no longer seek’s) from this dark tower,
when first you came to it.  Her answer cloaked her,
free and alone.  ‘You’d recognise this hour,’

said she on that last visit to your bower
brooding.  ‘Those who play must lose – it’s hopeless –
since all we’ve ever known, which means such power

as ever moved complacency to sour
tells us the winner must take all.  You choker!
free and alone, you’d recognise this hour.’

And now it chimes, the sun makes squint and glower
comes time, now comes the man, always the roper
since all we’ve ever known, which means such power,
free and alone.  You’d recognise this hour.
